Lucchese sponsors 20 families in Vila dos Papeleiros, a neighborhood in a precarious position in the southern Brazilian city of Porto Alegre.
Vila dos Papeleiros sits in a location that city planners see as a natural for tourist development. The current residents of the community, however, lost much of their infrastructure in a fire in 2005. Tasks as simple as finding water to make coffee, one resident told Brazilian newspaper O Globo, can take an hour a day.
Lucchese realizes that food security is fundamental to economic security. People can’t work if they don’t eat. Lucchese makes sure 20 families have food throughout the year. But Lucchese doesn’t just throw money at the problems of the community. Lucchese has taken the time to get to know the people he helps.
Lucchese schedules his work so he is in Vila dos Papeleiros at the end of every month so he can visit with the families when they pick up their food.
“After I began working with people there, I learned that my family is very similar to theirs. I was just born in better circumstances. We have to help other people to be able to go to school, to have food,” he said.
