New Standards for Geriatric Healthcare: Meet the Team Paving the Way

COVID-19 has caused a drop in American life expectancy last year, after decades of Americans living longer. Older adults were the hardest hit by the pandemic.  What can we do to help seniors live longer, healthier lives in the post-pandemic period?

Carmel Valley Manor’s health team has increased their efforts to use technology and other cutting-edge programs in order to improve the lives of its residents and staff. Seniors Healthcare: Innovations

The Life Care community of 59 years old has been enriched by the contributions of this dynamic group, which includes:

  1. This worksite is certified blue zone project approved and can be described as an environment where people make healthy decisions. The site incorporates the best wellness practices to prolong life from blue zones. These are areas where people live longer and healthier lives. Carmel Valley Manor, a Blue Zone Community, focuses specifically on programs that promote meaningful connections and wise eating. It also encourages an active lifestyle and a positive outlook through mindfulness and intention.

  2. Technology Advances –  which has enabled the implementation of technologically advanced healthcare at Carmel Valley Manor. Four new telemedicine kiosks have been installed on campus. They include stethoscopes (otoscopes) and cameras for dermatological exams. This kiosk provides remote monitoring of patients via secure communications and broadband connectivity.

  3. Smart Pharmacy – the tech enhanced community pharmacy helps residents reduce the risk of drug interactions. The Community’s partnership with Montage Health provides additional resources for residents.

  4. Clean & Green – Carmel Valley Manor replaced the chlorine in the swimming pool and hot tub with saline to create a healthier experience for residents using the pool and fitness center.

These innovations and improvements haven’t gone unnoticed. The U.S. News & World Report recently recognized Carmel Valley Manor as one of the 2022-23 Best Independent and Assisted Living Facilities. It was also named Best Retirement Community of Monterey County this year.

Montage Health’s renowned family medicine physician, Dr. Veliz is a Board Certified Family Medicine Physician. He received his medical degree from the Universidad Autónoma de Guadalajara, Mexico, after earning a bachelor’s degree from Pitzer College in Claremont, California, and completed his residency in family medicine at Abrazo Health Network in Phoenix, Arizona. His clinical interests in integrative and preventive medicine make him a key part of Carmel Valley Manor Wellness Team. He helps residents age well.
